About Me
I am a techno-geek! I keep my eyes glued to computer technology concentrating on personal computing. I don’t pay much attention to Apple products due to costs involved. I build my own computers because I get everything at cost when it comes to warranty work. I was amazed by electronics when I was young (back in the 60s). My first computer was an 8088 (20 megabyte hard drive with 2 51/4 in floppy drives. Learned to use DOS language so I could use my computer.) I still have my MS-DOS version 6.2 manual, but it’s not much use to me today. I have used computer operating systems by Microsoft the most. The first Windows OS I learned was Windows 3.1 left out Windows ME, Windows 2000, and NT in work environments. I focus mainly on Microsoft products although I take stabs at Linux and Jolicloud (cloud based OS). I am a non-technical user of social media. I am thoroughly disgusted with smart phone carriers in America and Canada. You must understand; smart phone, e reader, tablet, and notebook technology is rapidly evolving. Spending money for the next-best thing will put you in a money pit faster than anything else. I have admired some of the smart phones from afar. I like Windows Phone 7 and much of the Android based operating systems for smart phones. I prefer HTC as the manufacturer, but look forward to Nokia after Microsoft transforms Nokia. I currently own too many desktop computers to use at one time. My favored computer processor is the Intel versions, but AMD is my next build. AMD processors are less costly and I need to learn in that area. I’m retired living on a small Veteran’s Administration pension. My pension keeps me from going nuts buying a lot of the cool technology things around today. I don’t mind that, because technology is evolving at a fast pace. By the time I save enough money for a “cool tech” item, it is totally different! Since this is an about article on My Electronic Fog; I have no need to publish other things about me. How I got here reflects life interests. My interest in electronics, ham radio, Information Systems has bought my geek status.
you should really try ubuntu. i run it on vm and it is very user friendly. i use gimp on ubuntu to build my graphics for some of the websites i build or maintain. a lot more user friendly than on windows.
I’ve vm’d madriva, ubuntu, fedora; they don’t suit me very well. I’m not at all happy with Open Office, Libre, or IBM documents. Those programs don’t match MS Office with what I do with them. GIMP is a good program that I didn’t want to take the time to learn. Here again is the fit or feeling I have with Windows programs. I’m invested in Windows OS and the programs that run on it. I’ve yet to use the newest Ubuntu with Unity which may be much better to me. I think it is time and learning that I have with Windows that keeps me from learning Linux better. That is something I need to expand my knowledge of along with supporting Windows.
